Education

The aim of Crossing Borders was to create a national organisation, bringing together local groups working towards addressing the health inequality in the refugee and asylum seeker populations. We realised that education is a major component in increasing awareness about this inequality in healthcare access, especially among medical students, and that many medical students are keen to start the Refugee Health Student Selected Module (SSM) in their own universities. Thus we decided to put together a CD to assist anyone who is interested in starting this SSM or even want to introduce refugee health into the curriculum in the form of lectures in the core curriculum, which can be targeted towards pre-clinical and clinical students. The CD will be ready by September and will include guideline to preparing proposals to be submitted for university's approval, sample material used by coordinators in other universities, useful links and resources, reading material and tips by module coordinators. The resources in this starter pack are a form of guidance in terms of compiling a suitable curriculum to start in your universities. They can be used when putting forward your proposal to your universities and will be useful especially when trying to get members of staff to help out with coordinating this SSM. Anyone interested to start this SSM in their university, feel free to contact me, Kushalinii, at kushalinii@googlemail.com. I'll be happy to help out as much as I can and can also put you in touch with module coordinators, who are willing to help anyone wanting to  start this SSM, or even at a early stage just introduce Refugee Health as a lecture in their university.
